When’s The Best Time of Year To Move?

Almost everyone has moved at some point in their lives, and yet it still seems hard to get a clear answer on the best time of year to move. Is it summer? Lots of people like to move in the summer—but beware of the heat! Is it winter? Some will advocate for a quick and chilly move, but others will warn that you won’t be able to get movers in winter to save your life. Spring

Early in the year, it’s not peak moving season yet, so you can take advantage of cheaper moving rates and cooler weather at the same time. If you have kids in school, however, this may not be the best time for you—and if you wait until they’re out of school in May, those movers will get busy again and their rates will go up.

Summer

There’s a lot of attractive things about moving in the summer, from no school to worry about, to increased demand for homes so yours is more likely to sell. But if you live in Texas, you know what else comes with summertime—the heat. You may not want to move everything you own from one home, into a truck, out of a truck, and into another home, all in 100+ temperatures.

Fall

As the housing market slows down in the fall and temperatures cool, many folks across the country find this to be a great time to move. You won’t have to contend with the sweltering heat of high summer, but you’ll still be all moved in before the holidays. On the downside, this time can be difficult to navigate with school-aged children, and movers can be hard to get a hold of on the weekends closer to the holidays.

Winter

Winter may be a cheaper time to move, but it’s also more dangerous. If you live up north, you’ll have to contend with icy sidewalks and snowy roads, which can endanger your possessions as they’re in transit. If you live farther south, you may not have as much trouble with the weather, but it will still be cold! On the upside, however, many moving companies lower their rates during the winter, so you may have an easier time finding something in your budget.

Ultimately, it’s important to remember that you’re the person moving, so you have to choose the time that works best for you. There’s no reason to try to plan your move in fall because that’s the “best time,” if that’s when the kids are starting school and you’re starting a new job.
