Organizing Your Home For 2019

Out with the old, in with the new! If you’re ready for a new year and a new you, putting your holiday decorations away once the festivities are over, cleaning thoroughly, and getting organized can get your new year’s resolutions off to a great start. Making sure everything has a place to be put away is the first step to a clean and organized home.

Start the new year off right with our favorite organizing & decluttering tips:

Is it trash?

Look at your kitchen counter, right now. Are there piles of junk mail, discarded jackets, or empty food wrappers or boxes? You may need to go around the house with a trash bag and get rid of the garbage, before you can start to think about implementing an organization system. You don’t have to get a bin for it if it goes in the trash!

What does it do?

To go the truly minimalist route, determine the function of each item before determining whether to keep or toss it. If it’s a knick-knack or bauble that just takes up space and doesn’t provide significant value, it might be time to toss it.

Have you touched it in the last year?

This question is great for determining an item’s usefulness to you. Sure, that pineapple corer that converts into a whisk is cool, but have you ever actually used it? If the answer is no, maybe it’s just taking up space in your kitchen when it doesn’t need to.

Where does it live?

The most important question in the quest to declutter a home is determining where everything goes. If those Batman action figures don’t have a bin to go in, the odds that they will end up strewn all over your kitchen floor increases exponentially. Every item should have a designated storage area.

Home Décor Tips for Families with Kids

Home Décor Tips for Families with Kids
Decorating a house is an important part of making your home feel like, well, your home. When kids come into the picture, it gets harder to keep your home looking as nice and stylish as it once was. We have a secret to tell you: There’s no need to sacrifice having a fantastic looking home just because of the little ones. There are several ways to make any room look stunning while still keeping it kid-friendly! We’ve picked out some of our favorites to give you an idea of how to decorate your home while keeping those loveable mess-makers in mind.

Get Creative with Seating

If you’ve got a toddler wandering around, too-high seating areas and pointy edges might be a cause for concern. Considering replacing it with poufs or even a storage ottoman. These will be easier on the little one if any accidents happen. As your toddler grows, the poufs can provide extra seating for them and any playmates they might have over, freeing up couch space for the adults. And a storage ottoman can be great for quickly clearing toys off the living room floor before guests arrive. Poufs and ottomans are easy to move around, and can make great accent pieces to any room.

If you’re a DIY kind of person, you can take your old, rectangular coffee table and turn it into an ottoman with this handy guide!

Use an Outdoor Rug Indoors

Outdoor rugs are incredibly easy to clean, but they don’t just have to be kept outside. Find one that’s stylish to add a nice touch to your dining or living room. When the kids get messy during meal time or rowdy at play time, your floors will be protected and you don’t have to worry about an expensive rug being ruined!  These are also great to throw down in other high-traffic areas of your home, in case of muddy footprints or spilled drinks while your family moves about.

Window Seat Storage

For any family, storage is crucial for helping keep the home clutter-free. If you’ve got the space, why not build a window seat with storage in a family room or play room? It adds extra seating, makes for a great, cozy reading nook, and gives you another place to quickly and easily hide any clutter that occurs in your day-to-day living right before the guests come over.

Durable Paint and Chalkboard Walls

Walls are bound to take a beating when you have kids running around. If they’re bored, they want to bounce their basketball off their closet door. When they come home from softball practice, they’re kicking their cleats off against the baseboard. Of course, there’s also the inevitable drawing-on-the-wall experiment that everyone does once during childhood. Choosing paints that are easy to clean is a great option when you’ve got kids. If you’ve got a little artist, and you want to give them room to create, a chalkboard wall in the bedroom is another fantastic idea. You can also mix magnetics (which you can find at a home improvement store) and paint a wall in a busy hallway to hang up artwork or school work.

You don’t just have to focus on how durable furniture materials are (though that’s, of course, important). You can get fun, stylish, and creative too! There are a lot of fun ways to decorate your home that not only keep it kid-friendly, but also let’s your families’ personality shine through. Move-Up America values family needs, and our services can be very beneficial to those who are looking for the right home, especially in the case of growing families!
