How to Settle into a New Community After Moving

Settling somewhere new isn’t always easy. For everyone in your family, moving away from familiar places and people can leave you with feelings of discomfort and fear. After you uproot your family out of your familiar neighborhood and community, it’s important to leave your comfort zone in order to plant your family’s roots in a new community. Establishing connections and forming relationships with your community can help to make your new home – well, feel like home.

   1. Get to know your neighbors

Many people don’t take the time now to get to know who their neighbors are. Take the time to introduce yourself and learn more about them. You never know the kinds of relationships you can form with someone living right next door – or when you might need their help in a pinch. If they don’t beat you to it, take the time to bring your family next door and introduce yourself.

   2. Join online neighborhood and community groups

Nowadays, there’s a lot less walking door-to-door to talk to your neighbors and more jumping into online forums or groups. There are plenty of neighborhood and community groups formed online these days. One of the popular online neighborhood networking platforms is Nextdoor, a private social networking for your community. Many neighborhoods and communities also establish an online presence by forming a Facebook group.

   3. Host a house-warming party or a small block party

You don’t need to host an extravagant event to invite neighbors over to get to know them. Invite a few of the neighbors on your street for a small get-together. Forming these relationships not only keeps your community safer, it brings you together. Don’t feel comfortable having strangers in your home? If the weather is nice, host it in your backyard or in your driveway.

   4. Get involved

Volunteer or donate your time and effort to a cause in your local community. There’s bound to be a few causes your family can contribute to together. If you can’t find one, create your own! Take charge of getting to know your community this way and feel great knowing you’re doing something for a good cause. Get the kids involved, too. They’re likely in need of meeting some new friends, especially if they’ve recently had to change cities or schools.

   5. Join a Club

Whether it’s a book club, the PTA, or a booster club, joining other people with similar values and interests can help you meet and bond with new people. Joining a club or lending a hand to your kids’ school activities can also help you meet other parents who have children attending the same schools and could also help your kids to make new friends, too.

   6. Attend Community Events

Attending events hosted within your community can help your family find new, fun spots and activities near home. Community events are also a great way to help you learn who is helping contribute to your community. You can also learn more about how you can help to support the local businesses in your area. Community events can also be sporting events – does your community or city have a sports team? Lend your support by attending games – fun for the whole family and an opportunity to potentially meet new people!

Although it may take some time for your new place to feel like home, taking action to build connections can help ease you and your family into settling in a new community. You can always start small and branch out with each new opportunity you find. While this part of the post-moving process may seem difficult, Move-Up America is here to make moving to a new community easy! Contact us today to find out how you can move into a brand new home while saving time AND thousands of dollars in the process!
